A Despicable Man

It's not often that I personally get angry at a political candidate. I prefer to talk about issues because name-calling and the like rarely accomplish anything. But this time the candidates have gone to far. In Iowa on Monday John Edwards had this to say on health care:
"If we do the work that we can do in this country, the work that we will do when John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to get up out of that wheelchair and walk again,"
This makes me so angry I can hardly even speak! He's using the tragic death of one of the great men of our time for political gain! This is despicable, the epitome of dirty politics! I never actually thought that they would go this low. He should be called on to appologize, and John Kerry should denounce this statement as well.

Nevermind the disgraceful implication that our President is keeping people like Christopher Reeve in wheelchairs, this statement is an outright lie. There is absolutely no evidence at this point that stem cells could have help Christopher Reeve. His ailment was from an injury, not hereditary or genetic. Reeve knew this and even stated so in a Readers Digest article some time ago. Who is the only President to to fund stem cell research? That's right, President Bush to the tune of 25 million dollars. The thing he has done is restrict research to 15 already open lines. He also does not favor embryonic stem cell research because stem cells can be obtained from so many other souces easier. And the government has done nothing to restrict private research in this field. In any case no scientist anywhere has said that paralyzed people like Reeve would be able to walk as Edwards claims. So the claim that if Kedwards is elected people like Reeve will be healed is completely and utterly ridiculous.

When you come done to it, it amounts to fear mongering of the worst kind. "Vote for me and all you people in wheelchairs will be able to walk, vot for that guy and you'll be there for the rest of your life." If this were a republican he would have been crucified many times over in the newspapers everywhere. Instead democrats can get away with things like this, and this.

Disgusting!!
